Finally it was time, I went to get my PADI open water, or at least try to get it. This is a bucket list thing for me and to be able to do this on Curaçao makes it extra fun!
Together with 2 other housemates we had the idea to get our PADI open water here on Curaçao. Through the deal from CuraStage in collaboration with Dive Division we were also able to get it with a nice discount. Who would not want that? In any case, we do.
Before the deal we needed a total of 4 people to take advantage of it, so our search began for person number 4 who was as excited as us to get the PADI. Since our own housemates were not interested, we asked in a large group chat full of students if anyone was interested. And that's how we found person number 4, Sophie.
On Saturday 29 April it was time for the first day of the course. After days of learning the theory, we were finally allowed to apply it in the water. We started the day early, because we had to be at Blue Bay at 08:30 where we finally went to get our PADI. Quickly prepared a packed lunch and on to Blue Bay. We've started building up our gear so we know exactly what's for what and how everything works. The first dive lasted 53 minutes where we were at the maximum depth of 8.2 meters. This was deep enough for the first dive because it really takes some getting used to breathing underwater through your breathing piece.
We did various exercises underwater, all related to equalizing your ears and glasses, breathing calmly through your breathing piece and what to do when you run out of air. So very important things.
After the first dive we had an hour break to prepare for dive number 2.
The 2e dive we went a bit deeper and we were at the maximum depth of 10.2 meters. During this dive we already encountered several special fish such as the stone fish and the lionfish.
Course day 2, April 30, 2023
After a great night's sleep we were ready for the 2e and last course day. After arriving at Blue Bay, we immediately had to prepare our stuff ourselves, do a buddy check and get into the water. Today we went diving with a computer and a compass for the first time. The computer is a kind of watch that you wear while diving. On this you can see the depth, how long your dive lasts and many other tricks.
The first dive we started practicing some skills again. Including the emergency ascent. We had to swim to the surface from 6 meters without taking a breath. And then also take into account the pace at which you swim because you are not allowed to go up too quickly. This was a very tough exercise but luckily everyone passed the exercise.
As a reward we went diving again, and a lot deeper. Namely up to a maximum of 17.7 meters. It was really beautiful underwater and we were all enjoying all the beautiful things that live there.
After 40 minutes we went back to eat something and immediately take the theory test? EXCITING. After answering 40 questions we were told that all 4 of us had passed the theory test! Good thing, too.
There was one last dive planned and then we were told if we had passed our PADI. During this last dive we went to ??The Wall?? swum. This is a kind of wall with a lot of coral and fish, so super beautiful! After diving for an hour it was already time to get out of the water and we were told that all 4 of us had PASSED our PADI open water. So happy!!!
Another experience richer and I'm already looking forward to my next dive! I would really recommend everyone to get your PADI. Life underwater is so impressive and beautiful, so definitely worth it. And with a discount too!! What else do you want?? ?
