Of course you have to arrange a lot of things for your internship on Curaçao, but most of it is fun to arrange! However, there are also things that are super important to have properly arranged. Below we have listed a few things that can help you on your way.
Deregister in the Netherlands
When you stay longer If you are staying on Curaçao for eight months, you are obliged to deregister from the population register. You can arrange this at your municipality. Most municipalities require that you personally come by to request this document. It is therefore convenient that you call your municipality where you are registered and then ask what you should bring etc.
You must deregister at least five days before you leave. The municipality then also passes on your deregistration to the tax authorities. This always happens automatically, so you don't have to arrange anything yourself. When you are back in the Netherlands, it is important that you naturally register with the municipality again!
Your health insurance
You are not automatically insured for healthcare costs on Curaçao. Ask your health care provider which (additional) insurance you need to take out. Contact your own health insurer. He can tell you what to take into account. This way you prevent unpleasant surprises.
Student finance during your internship
It is often possible to keep your student finance if you do an internship in Curaçao. If you want to keep your student finance during your internship in Curaçao, you must remain enrolled as a full-time student in a Dutch study programme. Your internship must be part of this training. For more information about this, you can visit the website from the DUO.
Legal Statement
To do an internship in Curaçao, you must apply for a temporary work permit, a so-called Declaration of Law from the Cabinet of the Minister Plenipotentiary of Curaçao. Our experience is that your internship can arrange this for you or at least help you with applying for this statement by operation of law. You can find more information about the declaration by operation of law here you can find.
