Meraki Health Care:

Sick, an accident, unprotected sex, homesickness, or other medical problems? These are not pleasant situations during an internship abroad!

Fortunately, you can contact Meraki Health Care for trusted and good healthcare according to the Dutch model.

I am a Dutch trained and specialized general practitioner with up-to-date BIG registration.

I myself did internships in Curaçao for a year in 2006, so I know better than anyone what it is like to stay on Curaçao as an intern.

Because I liked this period so much, I eventually returned to beautiful Curaçao to practice my profession with passion.

Consultations take place by appointment in a beautiful, neat building without a full waiting room in the centrally located Rooi Catootje district.

A pharmacy and laboratory are 30 meters away from the practice.

In consultation, house visits, telephone or Whatsapp consultations are also possible.

Consultation / visit on location

Please note that the costs for a consultation must be paid directly to the GP. Keep the received consultation invoice in a safe place to submit it to your insurance company.

What is reimbursed?

With only basic health insurance you are entitled to reimbursement of all emergency medical costs up to the Dutch rate. The deductible applies to this. If the treatment abroad is more expensive than in the Netherlands, these weather costs are not covered.

Costs arising from risky activities are usually not (fully) reimbursed.

All emergency medical costs that are covered by the basic insurance up to the Dutch rate.

Extra costs (above the Dutch rate) are covered within the conditions of the supplementary insurance. This is usually twice the Dutch rate or a full reimbursement of the costs.

The deductible only applies to cover from the basic insurance.

Basic insurance cover, see point 1.

Any additional costs (which are not covered by the travel insurance under the basic insurance). Some travel insurance policies do have a separate deductible.

The difference with the supplementary insurance is that travel insurance often comes with multiple coverages as standard. such as luggage insurance and SOS assistance.

Finally, travel insurance is easier to expand with additional modules;

  • Reimbursement for high-risk sports (winter sports or diving)
  • Accident coverage
  • Legal counsel
  • car help

Basic insurance cover, see point 1.

Costs that are not covered by the basic insurance, for example if the treatment abroad is more expensive, are covered by:

  • The additional insurance
  • The travel insurance

The degree of cover depends on the policy conditions and chosen cover and modules.

Who reimburses the costs?

If you incur medical costs abroad, you can address two parties:

The party that is contacted first takes the necessary actions to call in assistance and to issue guarantees to care providers/hospitals for the healthcare costs that have been/will be incurred.

The travel insurance is addressed first

After assistance has been called in and the necessary administration has been received, the travel insurer will handle the insured's claim:

  • All medical costs that fall under the basic insurance will be recovered from the health insurer (deductible applies)
  • All medical costs that are only covered by the supplementary insurance will be recovered by the travel insurer from the health insurer (deductible not applicable)
  • Medical costs that only fall under the travel insurance will be covered by the travel insurer.
  • Costs that are not covered (by any insurance) will be recovered from the insured.

The health insurance is addressed first

In many cases, the health insurer will be the first to:

  • All medical costs that fall under the basic insurance will be covered by the health insurer (deductible applies).
  • All medical costs that only fall under the linked insurance will be covered by the health insurer (deductible not applicable).
  • Half (50 percent) of medical costs that are covered by both the travel insurance and the supplementary insurance will be recovered from the travel insurer.
  • All costs that only fall under the travel insurance will be recovered by the health insurer from the travel insurer.
  • Costs that are not covered (by any insurance) will be recovered from the insured.
